Lavrov Speaks of Tbilisi’s Proposal on UN-led Operations in Abkhazia
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on October 31 that the Russian side has not yet received any official proposal from Georgia regarding a full-scale UN-led peacekeeping operation in Abkhazia, RIA Novosti news agency reported.
Sergey Lavrov commented on a letter by Georgia’s Ambassador to the UN Revaz Adamia sent to the UN Security Council in which the Georgian diplomat says that the Russian-led peacekeeping operation has “exhausted its potential” and called for the design of a full-scale international, UN-led peacekeeping operation in Abkhazia.
“If we receive any letter we will discuss it. Each country has the right to propose something, including to the Security Council,” Lavrov said.
The Russian Foreign Minister said that “everything depends on what our Georgian colleagues want to achieve.”
“If the Georgian side wants to settle the conflict, it needs to implement agreements reached within the frames of the existing peacekeeping and negotiating formats. But if they want to aggravate the situation, this is merely a political game aimed at directing attention away from the real situation – both in the conflict zone and in Georgia, as a whole,” he added.
