Parliament to Discuss Downsizing Number of MPs

On February 16, the Parliamentary Committee for Legal Issues endorsed a draft constitutional amendment, envisaging a reduction of the number of MPs from the current 235 to 150, for further consideration at the Parliamentary session.

According to these amendments, 100 MPs will be elected through a proportional, party-list system, while 50 MPs will be elected in a single-mandate constituencies.

These amendments will be enforced if they recieve approval from the legislators, after the new Parliament is convened.

According to the referendum held on 2 November 2003, the number of MPs should be reduced from 235 to 150.
