Paper: Worsening of Crisis Anticipated in Abkhazia
The Georgian daily 24 Hours speculates, in an article published on January 5, that supporters of Raul Khajimba will try to disrupt the upcoming presidential elections in breakaway Abkhazia.
In December the once former presidential rivals Sergey Bagapsh and Raul Khajimba agreed to share power and participate in new elections on one team ? Bagapsh is running for President and Khajimba for Vice-President in the elections scheduled for January 12.
But according to 24 Hours, the powersharing agreement was ?a political failure? for Raul Khajimba?s closest allies, as well as for outgoing Abkhaz President Vladislav Ardzinba and current Prime Minister of the region Nodar Khashba. ?But they are not going to yield easily to this failure,? the paper says.
According to 24 Hours, supporters of Khajimba are ?actively preparing the public for the notion that the upcoming presidential elections results will be annulled.?
As a result, the paper does not rule out that a deeper political crisis than the one that followed the October 3 presidential polls may materialize in Abkhazia after the January 12 elections.
