U.S. Reiterates Support to Georgia

On November 16 the U.S. State Department reiterated that the United States is ready to help Georgia with economic development, its fight against corruption and the securing of its borders.

?We’ve certainly worked very well with the government of President Saakashvili in Georgia. We certainly look forward to continuing to work with him and with the government on the many things they have underway, where we’re working to help them with economic development, the fight against corruption and securing Georgia’s borders and Georgia’s territory, which we think is important for them, as well as for their neighbors and the whole region,? Richard Boucher, the spokesman of the U.S. Department of State, said at a news briefing on September 16.

When asked how progressive the development in Georgia has been since the new government came to power after last November’s Rose Revolution, Richard Boucher said, ?It’s not our habit to assess foreign governments at one year, or two years, or five years. Foreign governments, particularly in democracies, are responsible to their voters.?

The U.S. Department of State official also reiterated Washington?s support for ?Georgia’s aspirations in terms of the transatlantic community.?
