Russia Warns Bagapsh, Threatens to Intervene

Russian Foreign Ministry warned on November 12 that Moscow will undertake measures to protect its interests in Abkhazia, in case the situation will further deteriorates in the breakaway region, the Russian news agencies reported.

The statement was made after the supporters of the opposition leader Sergey Bagapsh captured the major governmental offices in Abkhaz capital Sokhumi on November 12. A 78-year-old woman died in hospital from bullet injury.

Russian Foreign Ministry?s spokesman Aleksandr Yakovenko described recent developments in Sokhumi as ?an attempt to forcefully take over the power.?

Moscow, which supports pro-governmental presidential candidate Raul Khajimba, warned the opposition that Bagapsh and his supporters will be fully responsible for possible consequences.

?If the situation in Abkhazia develops in illegal way, the Russian side will undertake measures in order to protect its interests in Abkhazia,? Aleksandr yakovenko added.
