Republicans to Suspend Cooperation with Ruling Party

Leader of the Republican Party Davit Berdzenishvili said on June 21, that the party intends to suspend cooperation with the ruling National Movement party, after he alleged the authorities of ballot-rigging during the June 20 local elections in Adjara.

The Republican Party has already accused the ruling party of ?mass ballot-rigging? during the elections.

?Saakashvili-Victorious Adjara [party backed by President Saakashvili] used almost the same methods during the voting, which were used by [ex-leader of Adjara] Aslan Abashidze?s Revival Union. We do not want to have any links with this party and will intend to leave it in the near future,? Davit Berdzenishvili said on June 21.

President Saakashvili?s supporter Victorious Adjara won a landslide victory with 75% of votes, while the Republican Party gained only 9% support, according to the early official results of polls.

The Republicans, which are in the coalition with the ruling National Movement-Democrats party in the Georgian Parliament run in the Adjarian elections separately. The Republican Party joined President Saakashvili?s National Movement two years ago.
