Russia Hails Cooperation with Georgia in Fighting Terrorism

The Russian Foreign Ministry hailed the activities of the Georgian authorities directed towards tackling terrorism.

“Russia was very glad to hear that Georgian law-enforcers found a large cache of arms on the Georgian territory, which belonged to Chechen fighters. This confirms Georgia’s readiness to cooperate with Russia in tackling terrorism,” Alexander Yakovenko, spokesman of the Russian Foreign Ministry said on March 25.

“Russia hopes that Tbilisi is disposed to activate its struggle against terrorism threat coming from the Pankisi gorge,” he added.

Georgian law enforcers found on March 23 a large arms cache in Georgia’s high mountainous region of Khevsureti, bordering with Russia’s rebel Chechen Republic.

Interior Minister Giorgi Baramidze said at a news briefing on March 23 that the arms cache included 40 ground-to-air missiles and other weapons, which allegedly belonged to Chechen fighters.
