Election Bodies Face Reforms

The Central Election Commission and the Justice Ministry developed proposals based on OSCE recommendations, regarding the reformation of the central and lower level election commissions.

According to the proposals presented by the Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Zurab Tchiaberashvili on March 10, number of the members of the CEC and district commissions will be reduced from 15 to 5, while precinct commissions to 9.

The members of the election commission should not be representatives of any political party.

The Parliament will appoint CEC Chairman and other 4 members; as a result the commission will be accountable to the legislative body.

The proposal also considers simplification of the procedures of voting and filling in final vote tally protocols.

The new draft will be submitted to the Parliament for discussion in April, after the election of the new legislative body.

“I hope that the implementation of these proposals would further increase public confidence towards the election administration,” Zurab Tchiaberashvili said.
