U.S. Interagency Team Reviews Assistance Proposals for Georgia

Members of the U.S. interagency team led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Lynn Pascoe, met today with Interim President Nino Burjanadze, and State Minister Zurab Zhvania.

The delegation, which consists of representatives from the White House, the Department of State, Treasury, Departments of Defense and Justice as well as the Trade and Development Agency and the United States Agency for International Development, arrived in Tbilisi on December 3 on a three-day official visit.

?The aim of our visit is to get acquainted with the current situation in Georgia and review specific assistance proposals for Georgia?s upcoming elections and support for Georgia?s political and economic reform. We have not specified what kind of assistance this will be. We will discuss during the visit,? Lynn Pascoe said at a news briefing on December 3 after the meeting with the Georgian leadership.

He reiterated that the United States will not interfere in Georgia?s internal affairs and will only limit itself by rendering assistance. As for the presidential and parliamentary elections, Lynn Pascoe said they should be as fair as possible to express the will of the Georgian people.

The members of the U.S. delegation will also hold meetings with the representatives of various political parties.
