UES Starts Operating in Georgia

(Tbilisi, September 1, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The Russia’s state-owned Unified Energy System (UES) officially starts operating in Georgia today.

UES purchased a 75 percent stake in the Telasi electricity distribution facility from the U.S. company AES in early August.

Presently the capital city Tbilisi is facing energy crisis due to the indebtedness of the previous owner of Telasi to the Wholesale Electricity Market.

Moreover, according to the decree of the Justice Ministry, electricity tax increased in Tbilisi from the 1st of September. The increase of electricity tax is one of the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund.
