Parliamentary Chairperson Slams Government’s Pre-Election Moves

(Tbilisi. April 21, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze called the government today to avoid misuse of power and administrative leverages on the eve of the Parliamentary elections.

“I am concerned with the fact that the provincial governors are instructed to do everything in order to secure majority of votes during the elections,” Nino Burjanadze said at the news briefing today.

“This kind of steps would lead to the dictatorship and authoritarian governance,” Parliamentary Chairperson said.

She also said that the government’s policy poses threat to democracy in Georgia.

Burjanadze also said that she opposes the President’s initiative on rule of composition of the Central Election Commission. According to the proposal the CEC will be composed with 11 members, 9 of them will be proposed by the President and two by the authorities of the Abkhaz (in exile) and Adjarian Autonomous Republics to the Parliament for approval.
