Parliamentary Commission Demands From CEC to Start Recounting Votes

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, July 24, 2002) – Today Temporary Investigation Commission of the Parliament of Georgia to Study Reasons of Election Violations categorically demanded from the Central Election Commission (CEC) to start recounting of votes cast during the local elections in Tbilisi immediately.

In June Tbilisi district court ruled positively on National Movement’s appeal demanding recounting votes in Tbilisi because of numerous procedural violations that occurred during the locals.

Jumber Lominadze, Chairman of the CEC stated at the meeting of the Parliamentary Commission today that the National-Democratic Party appealed the Supreme Court demanding cancellation of the locals results and that is why the recounting is not started so far. According to Lominadze lack of finances is another reason for delaying recounting.

The Parliamentary Commission stated that in case on July 25 CEC will not set up the exact date when the recounting starts, the Commission will file the case into General Procuracy against the CEC for not fulfilling court’s decision. The Commission members decided to meet with the Finance Minister on July 25 to solve the financial problems.

The Labor Party of Georgia and the National Movement obtained the most seats in Tbilisi city council – Sakrebulo after the local elections on June 2.
