Group to Develop Plan on “Georgia’s Survival”

Following two hours of talks at the public defender’s office today, Georgian public organizations, opposition parties and experts agreed to set up a special group to work out how to overcome the country’s current crisis.

“It will be a working group, uniting the non-governmental organizations, parties, public representatives, which will develop a plan on how to save the country,” Sozar Subari told reporters after the meeting.

The group will hold its first meeting on October 10.

Opposition parties – the Republicans, New Rights, Georgia’s Way, Conservatives, Movement for United Georgia, Traditionalists – were all represented, as was Levan Gachechiladze, one of the leaders of the united opposition, at the closed-door meeting at the public defender’s office.

The participants also discussed the public defender’s statement issued on September 25. In a tough-worded statement, Subari spoke out against “authoritarianism.” “New disasters are to be expected in the event of a continuation of authoritarianism,” Subari said in the statement.

All the participants of the meeting put their signatures to the statement.

“Today, when our country is facing a catastrophe and even worse is expected… we are obliged to stand together to save our country,” Subari said.
