Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Meets Abkhaz leader

Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Grigory Karasin, met with Abkhaz leader, Sergey Bagapsh, in Moscow on September 7.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that conflict resolution issues had been discussed with, as it put, “the President of Abkhazia.” The previous use of the term in official Russian documents has drawn criticism from Tbilisi in the past.

“Difficulties obstructing the resumption of peace talks were also discussed,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The withdrawal of Georgian forces and the Tbilisi-backed Abkhaz government-in-exile from the upper Kodori Gorge are among a number of Abkhaz preconditions for the resumption of dialogue with the Georgian side.
