Cutting Age Limit of MP to 21 Planned

The minimum age for becoming an MP will be reduced from current 25 to 21, according to planned amendment to the constitution.

“I think it [the proposal] creates an important opportunity for young people to actively participate in the parliamentary life,” said ruling party MP Pavle Kublashvili on March 29.

“Any person aged 21 will be able to run in the next parliamentary elections,” MP Kublashvili, who chairs parliamentary committee for legal affairs, added.

Before the parliamentary vote the constitutional amendment will require to undergo a formal one-month process of public discussions. In case of approval by the Parliament, the proposal will also require relevant amendments to the election code.
