Saakashvili Warns Voters Against Opposition in Local Government

President Saakashvili called on voters to make "a responsible choice" in local elections, saying that presence of opposing political forces in local and central government would not make thier everyday life better.

Saakashvili was speaking on May 14 with journalists after opening a school canteen in one of Tbilisi’s public schools, where plastic cards were introduced for the first time in Georgia for pupils to purchase meal at the canteen.

“I want simply everyone to understand, that now there are local elections and if the local municipality, the Education Ministry and the President had been wrangling with each other, heaven forbid, no such things would have been done,” he said referring to new school canteen.

“Things like these are possible only in case of joint, coordinated work of governments at all levels,” he said.

“Therefore, when people make a choice on May 30, it will not be a general political choice the results of which they will watch on TV. They will watch the results in the schools of their children, in their yards, their streets, their jobs. Shortly speaking, results will be reflected on the population on a daily basis,” Saakashvili said.

“Of course, politics are involved in all these and therefore, we should make a responsible choice,” he added.
