Georgia, Russia Handed Over War Report

The EU-funded mission, probing into the causes of the August war, presented results of its findings to the representatives of Georgia, Russia, EU, UN and OSCE on September 30.

The text of the report will be published later on September 30 on the mission’s website – www.ceiig.ch.

Welcoming the presentation of the report, EU said it “takes note of its content.”

“Underlining the independent nature of the report, the EU hopes that its findings can contribute towards a better understanding of the origins and the course of last year’s conflict and, in a broader perspective, serve as an input to future international efforts in the field of preventive diplomacy,” EU said in the statement.

“The EU also recalls that a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflicts in Georgia must be based on full respect for the principles of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity as recognised by international law.”

Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Conflict in Georgia (IIFFMCG), led by Swiss diplomat, Heidi Tagliavini, was established in December with the mandate to investigate the origins and the course of the war, including with regard to international law, humanitarian law and human rights.
