Government Plans to Fund NGOs

A state foundation to help “develop” and “enhance the role” of non-governmental sector will be established in accordance to the presidential order, Dimitri Shashkin, the minister of prison system and probation, said on May 19,

Shashkin, who has been tasked by President Saakashvili to coordinate “new wave of democratization”, is in charge of coordinating work of the foundation.

“It [the foundation] will provide an opportunity for all non-governmental organizations to receive funding and support from the state in order to settle various outstanding problems in the capital and in the provinces,” Shashkin told journalists.
