Reports: Russia Plans Navy Base in Ochamchire

Russia will launch setting up of a base for its Black Sea Fleet in the port of Ochamchire, breakaway Abkhazia, this year, Russian news agency, Itar-Tass, reported on January 26.

“A decision on creation of a base for the Black Sea Fleet in Ochamchire has already been achieved in principle,” Itar-Tass reported quoting unnamed official from the Russia’s navy. “In 2009 we will start practical works on the Abkhaz coast, including dredging; the works will take years. The details of the plan are being agreed with the Abkhaz side.”

Also on January 26, Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, appointed Alexander Golovin, as his special envoy for delimitation of “the Russian Federation’s state borders with the Republic of Abkhazia, Georgia and the Republic of South Ossetia,” the Kremlin reported.
