Ruling Party Says Willing to Reform Election Code

Senior ruling party officials said on November 8, the authorities had “clear-cut will” to work on improvement of the current election code.

Davit Bakradze, the Parliamentary Chairperson, told journalists that the issue was discussed at the meeting between the Anti-Crisis Council and President Saakashvili late on November 8.

A group of opposition parties, which have announced launch of “new wave” of campaign to achieve early parliamentary and presidential elections in spring, 2009, is demanding reform of the current election system.

“I want to stress that changes in the election code is an issue, which we have been planning months ago and it has nothing to do with early elections,” Bakrazde said.

He also said that the reformed election code would reflect “all those recommendations, which have been put forth by the international organizations after the recent [presidential and parliamentary] elections.”
