Medvedev: NATO Expansion Aimed against Russia
The expansion of NATO military infrastructure in Europe is a threat to Russia’s security, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at an international conference in Evian on October 8.
“The issue of Georgia’s and Ukraine’s NATO membership is actively being discussed today,” he said. “But to receive these countries means gaining an upper hand on Russia, while not to receive means capitulating before Russia.”
“In reality the issue is quite different – the alliance is drawing its military infrastructure closer to the borders of our country and draws new dividing lines in Europe, now near our western and southern borders,” he continued. “It is quite natural that – whatever they may say – we believe that these actions are directed against us.”
