Tbilisi Accuses Moscow of ‘Libellous Propaganda Campaign’
Russian accusations that Georgia is formenting trouble in the conflict regions is a continuation of a libellous propaganda campaign designed to mislead the international community, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on October 7.
The Russian Foreign Ministry had earlier accused certain forces in Tbilisi of deliberately fuelling tensions through a series of terrorist acts. The intention, the Russian MFA, said was to provoke a military response.
The Georgian MFA, however, has countered with its own accusation, saying the Russian side is engaged in criminal practices in the conflict zones.
“In particular, three Georgian policemen were killed when shots were fired from checkpoints set up illegally by Russian servicemen. Roads and various buildings are mined systematically, resulting in civilian casualties,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
It also claimed that “the terrorist act committed in Tskhinvali on October 3 and the further escalation of the situation is part of a previously designed plan aimed at dragging out the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Georgia and obstructing the deployment of EU monitors in the conflict zone.”
Tbilisi called on the international community to take all measures necessary to ensure the Russian Federation’s unconditional compliance with the six-point ceasefire agreement.
