Turkish Red Crescent humanitarian assistance to Georgia

Turkish Red Crescent Society (TRCS) is providing humanitarian assistance for those people who have been driven from their homes by the ongoing conflict in the Caucasus. Due to the conflict breaking out on August 8 in the province of South Ossetia, tens of thousands of civilians had to flee the region. The UNHCR estimates that some 158.000 people have been displaced by the conflict while thousands remain without adequate access to basic needs including shelter, food and water, medical care, and education.

TRCS has so far dispatched 7.000 food rations, 20 tonnes of food, 160 tents, 2.500 blankets, 720 beds, 1.700 kitchen sets, 150 portable beds, 1000 bottled water (1,5 lt) and 1.900 pieces of sports suits to the region and in close coordination with Georgian Red Cross has distributed the said relief items to the affected population in Tbilisi, Gori and its surrounding towns. Currently TRCS has a relief team in the region that consists of 5 relief staff. The team has also, from the local market, provided food rations and hygine materials for some 700 IDPs currently living in Tbilisi. TRCS’ response will be expanded as emergency and long-term needs are detailed.
