Federal Foreign Office of Germany makes available one million euro for humanitarian aid in Georgia

The Government of Germany Press-Release

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier today (11 August) continued his intensive efforts to mediate between the parties to the conflict and to help defuse the situation.

The civilian population, many of whom had to flee the conflict zone, are suffering most from the current military clashes. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has stated that the humanitarian situation in the conflict zone is deteriorating dramatically. The ICRC President said this to Federal Minister Steinmeier at the weekend during a telephone conversation. The Minister has decided to initially provide one million euro for humanitarian relief measures in order to ease the hardship of the refugees.

The Federal Foreign Office has made the funds available to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as well as the Red Cross organization. They will be used to finance emergency shelters, emergency medical care, as well as other relief supplies for those who have fled the crisis zone.
