Opposition Coalition Demands CEC Chair’s Resignation
The nine-party opposition bloc renewed on April 29 demanding replacement of the current chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), Levan Tarkhnishvili, with “a neutral person,” who would be acceptable for both the ruling party and the opposition.
Speaking after meeting with representatives from the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), MP Kakha Kukava of the Conservative Party, part of the nine-party bloc, also claimed that the CEC was not cooperative to make corrections in the voter lists.
He also said that it was of urgent need to monitor police activities. He alleged that law enforcement agencies were “exerting pressure” on opposition majoritarian MP candidates in the provincial regions.
