Parliamentary Election Set for May
Parliamentary elections will be held this May, in accordance with a constitutional amendment passed unanimously by Parliament on February 26.
The amendment follows the January 5 plebiscite, in which 79% of voters said they wanted parliamentary elections this spring instead of late 2008.
It is up to the president to set the exact date for the polls. President Saakashvili must announce the date no later than 60 days before the elections. The ruling National Movement Party proposed earlier to hold elections sometime between May 14 and May 24.
