Georgian Serviceman in Iraq Commits Suicide – MoD Says

A corporal from the 3rd infantry brigade, Zurab Chigoshvili, committed suicide while serving in Iraq, the Georgian Ministry of Defense confirmed on October 2.

The incident occurred on September 30 in the city of Al Kut, where Georgian troops are deployed, according to the MoD.

Officials ruled out any connection between the suicide and the corporal?s military service and said it was as a result of personal difficulties.

A total of 18 Georgian servicemen have been injured in Iraq since the first deployment in August 2003.

Georgian troop levels in Iraq were increased from 850 to 2,000 this summer. They are, however, due to be reduced to 300 in summer, 2008.
