Ombudsman Condemns Arrest of Activists

Georgian Public Defender Sozar Subari condemned on July 4 as ?illegal? arrest of four members of the non-governmental organization Equality Institute.

Four activists, including chief of the group Irakli Kakabadze, were detained and sentenced to 30-day imprisonment when they were protesting outside the Court of Appeals in Tbilisi demanding through a megaphone a fair trial for jailed founder of the 202 TV Shalva Ramishvili on June 29. Eka Tkeshelashvili, Chairman of the Court of Appeals, said activists were insulting judge and creating obstacles to a court hearing.

Sozar Subari said that a person can only be arrested if he stages disorders inside the court?s building.

He said that the court gave ?inadmissible interpretation? of the Criminal Procedure Code, which says that a person should be held responsible for the violation of the order inside the court?s building.
