Bagapsh Calls on Tbilisi to Improve Social Conditions of IDPs
President of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh called on the Georgian authorities to improve social conditions of Georgian internally displaced persons and added that the Abkhaz authorities will not let a group of Georgian IDPs to enter the Abkhaz territory.
Around 50 Georgian displaced persons from Abkhazia threatened on June 28 to denounce Georgian citizenship and to go to the unrecognized Abkhaz Republic as a protest against rehousing plan proposed by the Georgian authorities and Kazakh investors, who bought resort hotels on the Adjara?s Black Sea coast.
?If this is one more provocation to trigger escalation of the situation in Abkhazia, we will take all measures to prevent it,? Bagapsh said at a press conference on June 29, but he also added that ?if among the refugees there are residents of the Gali district, who have not fought against us, we will discuss this issue as usually.?.
?Instead of unimaginable increasing the military budget, it is better to spend these funds on social needs and supporting of those people, who live on their historical land. The Georgian authorities would better integrate them into Georgia, its economy and social life,? the Abkhaz leader said.
