Saakashvili: We Control Situation
President Saakashvili said at an emergency session of the National Security Council (NSC) that the government is in “full control” of the situation and everything is being done to overcome the crisis after the gas supply was cut off from Russia following two explosions at pipelines in Russia’s North Ossetia republic on January 22.
“We control the situation. We have not been confused and I am sure we will be able to improve the situation,” he said at the NSC session, which was broadcasted live by Georgian television stations.
President Saakashvili, who earlier on Sunday blamed Russia for “sabotaging” Georgia, said that cutting off the gas supply “was a scenario which we have been threatened with by decision-makers in Russia.”
He said that everything should be done to avoid a similar crisis in the future. “We should foster the implementation of the Shah-Deniz [gas pipeline] project,” he said.
