Arrested President of Football Federation Resigns

President of the Georgian Football Federation Merab Zhordania, who was arrested for alleged misappropriation charges on April 7, filed his resignation on Friday.

Zhordania has already been arrested once for alleged tax evasion. He was released in January, 2004 after spending almost a month in pre-trial custody, following repayment of 742,000 Lari (USD 406,000) to the state budget, the sum which Zhordania allegedly misappropriated.

The Georgian Football Federation has not set a date for elections of a new President yet. Reports say that former soccer player Vladimir Gutsaev, who is now a parliamentarian from the ruling National Movement party, is the most likely candidate to take over the office.
