Prime Minister, Railway Chief Visit Tskhinvali

Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania and the chief of the Georgian Railway company, Davit Onoprishvili, left this afternoon for the South Ossetian capital  of Tskhinvali to discuss details concerning the restoration of the Tskhinvali-Georgia railway link with the self-styled authorities of the breakaway republic

Restoration of the railway system in the region is part of the humanitarian initiatives launched by Georgia?s central government aiming, as Tbilisi put it, towards rebuilding trust between the Georgians and Ossetians.

The European Commission has been funding restoration of the railway link between Tskhinvali and town of Gori, which is just 30 km away from self-styled South Ossetian capital, for couple of years already. Up to 6 km-long railway route remains to be restored in order to resume rail connection.

According to the chief of the Georgian Railway company the European Commission has already allocate 400,000 euros for this project, which is implemented in frames of the Humanitarian and Rehabilitation Assistance Programs in South Ossetia.

The European Commission is also funding rehabilitation of the railway station in Tskhinvali in frames of this project.
