Tbilisi, Moscow to Launch Talks over Easing the Visa Regime

Easing visa requirements between Russia and Georgia will be discussed during the bilateral meeting to be held in Moscow in late June, according to Georgian Ambassador to Russia Kote Kemularia.

?Special working groups will be set up, which will work over simplification of the visa regime between Russia and Georgia. In particular, the citizens will have a chance to get visas right in the airport,? Kote Kemularia told Civil Georgia on May 28.

?The proposal will be finalized during the Moscow meeting, which apparently will take place on June 25,? he added.

The Georgian Ambassador said, this issue was discussed during the talks between President Saakashvili and Russian President Putin in February, as well as during Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania?s recent visit to Moscow.

?Russians are also interested in simplification of visa regime with Georgia,? Kemularia added.

Russia imposed visa requirements with Georgia in late 2000 under the pretext to prevent Chechen militants? infiltration from Georgia into Russia. Russia has simplified visa regimes with Georgia?s two breakaway regions ? Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
