Ex-Railway Chief Released from Custody

Former chief of the state-owned Georgian Railway company Akaki Chkhaidze was released from custody today after paying $3 million (approximately 6 million Lari).

Akaki Chkhaidze is accused of embezzlement of approximately 5 million Lari.

“Akaki Chkhaidze has already paid $3 million in order to be released from custody. He denies accusations and will prove his innocence,” Chkhaidze’s attorney told reporters.

The Prosecutor General’s Office says the investigation will continue and if the law enforcers prove that Chkhaidze is responsible for misappropriation of more funds from the state budget “the relevant actions will be taken.”
