Saakashvili Wants Strong Presidency

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili expressed support to introduction of the constitutional changes, envisaging increased power for the President.

He told the Georgian reporters in Germany on January 29 that the constitutional reforms are to be implemented to change the entire governance system in the country.

“I am not going to be a President, who has no functions,” Saakashvili said on January 29.

State Minister Zurab Zhvania also said on January 28 that he supports the model, which will enable the executive authorities “to dissolve the inefficient parliament.”

However, some representatives of the civil organizations already protest against these changes and favor for the strong Parliament, which will be a mechanism of control of the President.

Some political analysts in Georgia already foresee a disagreement between the November revolution leaders. Nino Burjanadze, the Parliamentary Chairperson said on January 22 that she will not be a speaker of “weak Parliament.”
