Abkhaz Side Calls Russia to Veto Peace Enforcement

(Tbilisi, July 19, 2003, Civil Georgia) – De facto Vice President of breakaway Abkhazia Valeri Arshba hopes that as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia will veto Georgia’s intention on implementation of Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, implying peace enforcement in Abkhazia.

Abkhaz news agency Apsnipress reported quoting de facto Vice President Valeri Arshba that there is no reason to apply this chapter in Abkhazia today.

“They [Georgians] seek to expel Russia out of the region and try to restore their jurisdiction over Abkhazia,” he said.

The de facto Vice President believes that the Georgian side simply wants to escalate tension in the conflict zone.

The National Security Council of Georgia took into consideration the demand of the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in- exile and supported on July 11 implementation of the Chapter VII of the UN Charter, for peace enforcement in Abkhazia.
