UNOMIG Protests Resumption of Rail Link Between Russia and Abkhazia

(Tbilisi, December 27, 2002. Civil Georgia) – Deputy Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Georgia Roza Atunbaeva said at the news briefing today that the UN Observers Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) was not informed concerning the resumption of the railway route between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia.

She stated that such a unilateral moves hinders peace process in between the conflicting parties.

On December 25 the first train in past ten years crossed the border between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia. The train goes from Russia’s city of Sochi to breakaway Abkhaz capital Sokhumi.  

Georgian authorities expressed protest regarding the restoration of the railway link between Russia and separatist region.

“Restoration of the railway route is the violation of the CIS agreements [on blockade of breakaway Abkhazia],” Nino Burjanadze, Parliamentary Chairperson said on December 26.
