Parliamentary Committee Chairman Slams the Draft Law on Grants

(Tbilisi, February 19, Civil Georgia) – Open hearings of the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Policy discussed the draft law on Charity, Grants and Humanitarian Assistance on February 19. Representatives of the NGOs also participated in the discussion.

Chairman of the Committee Vano Merabishvili slammed the draft law together with the representatives of NGOs. However, he said that “if the draft is submitter [to the parliament] it is most likely to be passed, because some MPs have personal interests [against NGOs].”

The draft introduces the notion of “[state] control over utilization of the grants”, which is unacceptable for the NGO community as it could be interpreted as a control over the contents and details of implementation of the activities sponsored by the grant.
