CEC Refuses to Register New National Movement’s Nominee

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, October 30, 2002) – Central Election Commission (CEC) refused today to register New National Movement party’s nominee Zviad Dzidziguri, which wants to run for MP in by-election in Samtredia constituency in western Georgia.

The part of the members of the CEC voted against Dzidziguri’s registration. The members of the New National Movement (MP Mikheil Saakashvili is the leader of the party) say that this is political decision.

Several members of the CEC, which supported to register New National Movement’s candidature, claim that Dzidziguri had all the documentation necessary for the registration.

The New National Movement intends to appeal the Supreme Court concerning the CEC decision.

By-election in Samtredia constituency, as well as in other three districts will be held on November 30.
