Shevardnadze Hails Political Parties’ Union

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, July 15, 2002) – President Eduard Shevardnadze stated in his Monday radiobroadcast on July 15, that he welcomes “political parties closer ties to prevent anticipated destabilization.”

“Some statements of the political parties’ union might be arguable, but the content of the union is definitely positive,” Eduard Shevardnadze said.

On July 12 nine political parties, including the New National Movement, United Democrat (Zhvania’s Team), National-Democratic Party, the New Rights, Traditionalists and others, sighed a statement condemning the government’s criminal activity.

The parties claim that the President Shevardnadze’s government pushes the society towards the confrontation and civil conflict.

The political parties say that the joint statement is a very important event as the several political groups, which are the opponents to each other, could unite against the government’s policy for the first time in the recent year.
