GUAM Foreign Ministers Discussed Organization’s Perspectives

(Tbilisi, June 17, Civil Georgia) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoli Zlenko discussed with his Georgian, Azerbaijani and Moldavian counterparts perspectives of the GUAM, organization of four former Soviet Republics on June 17.

According to the Russian media sources Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reports that the GUAM member countries Foreign Ministers agreed that the organization should continue implementation of its’ goals despite Uzbekistan’s decision to pull out of the organization.

Uzbekistan was also the member of the strategic alliance GUUAM (Georgian, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Moldova) till recently. Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan officially announced on June Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan has officially announced on June 13 that Uzbekistan pulls out of GUUAM.

Georgian President hopes that Uzbekistan’s decision is not final. According to the information received from Tashkent (capital of Uzbekistan) on June 16 it seems that Uzbekistan’s decision to leave GUUAM is not final, President Shevardnadze said in his Monday radiobroadcast on June 17. President said no details of the information.
 
GUUAM was set up in 1997 as a political, economic and strategic alliance designed to strengthen the independence and sovereignty of its members. Uzbekistan joined the group later, in 1999.
