Parliamentary Opposition’s Leaders Meet President Shevardnadze on Local Self-Governance Elections
Meeting bewteen the President and the Opposition leaders on the issues of amendments to the Law on Local Self-Governance is scheduled for today.
The Opposition urges President to submit to the Parliament a renewed version of the bill, under which mayors and governors woould be elected from the members of sakrebulos (councils) by the members themselves. Accoriding to the bill, that has been submitted by the President previously, mayors and governors would be selected by President from the members of sakrebulos.
As the Opposition leaders has stated, if President would not accept to the Opposition’s proposal, they [the Opposition] would not participate in the discussions of these issues at the Parliament at all.
