Opposition Removes ‘Cells’ at President’s Residence
Movement for United Georgia, one of those parties behind the ongoing street protests, said it was removing mocked up cells from outside the presidential residence in the Avlabari district and “temporarily” suspending the residence’s picketing.
The party, whose activists have been camped for over two months at the presidential residence, said that the opposition decided to remove ‘cells’ in order to prevent provocations from the side of the authorities and to prevent further arrests of its activists. The party said that six of its activists have been arrested for various “fabricated” charges.
The move is the latest in the process of cutting down area of protest venues launched in mid-May by removing ‘cells’ from Kostava street outside the public broadcaster. Since then ‘cells’ have been removed from the Freedom Square, from outside the government’s administration and from part of the Rustaveli Avenue. Mocked up prison cells remain blocking the Rustaveli Avenue outside the Parliament.
