MIA: Policeman Dies in Blast at S.Ossetian Border

One Georgian policeman died and six others were injured in an explosion close to the breakaway South Ossetia’s administrative border on March 29, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) said.

It said that a Georgian police pickup with five servicemen from MIA’s special task force in it were on a routine patrol, when their vehicle hit a mine close to the village of Dvani of Kareli district at 8:30am local time. The village is located in an immediate vicinity of the breakaway region’s administrative border line. One of the policemen, Badri Jioshvili, died in hospital.

Shortly after the explosion, two policemen were sent for assistance to the incident site, the ministry said. A second mine went off upon their arrival, which injured both newly arrived policemen, according to the Interior Ministry.

With this recent incident, the number of Georgian policemen killed in an immediate vicinity of the Abkhaz and South Ossetian administrative borders has reached twelve since the August war.
