EU Diplomats Condemn Attacks on Georgian Policemen
The Tbilisi-based diplomats from EU-member states said in a joint statement on January 20, that they “are deeply concerned” by the recent attacks on Georgian police officers in the areas close to the Abkhaz and South Ossetian administrative borders.
A Georgian policeman was killed by a sniper near the South Ossetian administrative border on January 16. Another was wounded at the Abkhaz administrative border on January 18 and two more were injured close to South Ossetia on January 19. The number of killed Georgian policemen has reached eleven since the August war.
“The Heads of the EU Missions in Tbilisi… condemn such attacks which are unacceptable and constitute clear and serious breaches of the Sarkozy-Medvedev Agreements,” the statement reads. “They expect full investigation of the incidents on both sides of the Administrative Boundary Lines in order to bring the persons responsible to justice.”
“All sides must fulfill their responsibilities in accordance with the ceasefire agreements. The Heads of the EU Missions in Tbilisi call on Russia to ensure security in the separatist regions, to grant an access of international monitors to South Ossetia and Abkhazia and to ensure that instability does not spread from those regions into the rest of Georgia.”
