UK Government to support Red Cross appeal for Georgia
United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) Press-Release
The UK Government is giving £500,000 to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) appeal for Georgia.
This initial contribution will go towards the ICRC’s preliminary appeal for 8 million Swiss Francs launched yesterday, 12 August.
The money that the UK is pledging today will help ICRC staff on the ground provide extra medical and surgical aid to the injured as well as restoring the water supply in Tskhinvali, South Ossetia’s main town. It will also mean that civilians wounded or affected by the recent fighting will be offered the protection and assistance they need.
The ICRC is likely to issue a further, bigger appeal in the coming days. The United Nations may also issue an appeal. We will consider further humanitarian funding in the light of those appeals and the assessment of the needs of people on the ground.
