Opposition Rallies to ‘Protect Imedi TV’

Several thousand people are gathered outside Parliament at an opposition-organized protest rally under the banner of ‘protecting Imedi TV.’

“Imedi TV’s freedom amounts to the freedom of speech and freedom of the media in Georgia… We should save Imedi… We appeal to international organizations and the international community to stand beside our fair struggle,” a written statement read out at the protest rally said.

The statement was signed by the eight-party opposition coalition, the New Rights Party, the Republican Party, the National-Democratic Party, as well as several non-governmental organizations, including Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights and the Equality Institute.

Ownership of Imedi TV is currently disputed between Badri Patarkatsishvili’s widow and Patarkatsishvili’s step cousin, Joseph Kay, alias Joseph Kakalashvili. The Patarkatsishvili family claims that Kay purchased shares in the TV company through falsification of documents. Patarkatsishvili’s widow, Inna Gudavadze, said in a written statement on March 24 that the dispute should not “be politicized” and should be resolved in the courts.
