Russian Foreign Minister Comments on Georgia

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has declined to respond to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s assumptions that Moscow may orchestrate troubles in Georgia for Russia’s internal consumption.

“I would not like to comment on the statements of this political figure [referring to President Saakashvili],” Sergey Lavrov was quoted by RIA Novosti news agency as saying on November 6. “It is obvious for everyone that actions undertaken by the Georgian leadership are embraced by farce.”

He also said: “We are concerned about what is happening in Georgia.”

Meanwhile, Sergey Mironov, chairman of the Council of Federation of Russia, the upper house of the parliament, said there was no need in commenting on President Saakashvili’s statement.

“It seems, however, that protest rallies will expand to other cities of Georgia as well,” RIA Novosti quoted Mironov as saying on November 6.
