Opposition Leaders to Visit Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Washington

Georgian opposition leaders are planning visits to Europe and the United States in an attempt to convey the message to western policy-makers that there is, as they put it, ?a democratic alternative to the Saakashvili regime? in Georgia.

Salome Zourabichvili, the leader of the opposition Georgia?s Way party, will leave for Berlin on October 11 and then on to Paris, where she will try to meet with the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, her party’s press office reported.

Meanwhile, Davit Usupashvili and Konstantine Gamsakhurdia, leaders of the opposition Republican and Freedom parties, respectively, plan to visit Brussels and hold talks with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.

In late October leaders of the Republican Party Davit Usupashvili, Tina Khidasheli and Levan Berdzenishvili are expected to visit the United States.

Salome Zourabichvili, Davit Usupashvili and Konstantine Gamsakhurdia visited the United States late last month. The three opposition leaders spoke about recent developments in Georgia at a Washington-based think-tank, the Nixon Center, on September 28.
