NATO PA Calls for ‘Intensified Dialogue’ with Georgia

In its declaration on Georgia, passed on May 30 in Paris, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly urged member governments of the alliance to launch an Intensified Dialogue with Georgia, preferably in summer 2006.

Intensified Dialogue with NATO is viewed as a precursor to being invited to enter the alliance Membership Action Plan (MAP), while the latter should eventually lead to NATO membership.

In the declaration, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly noted “significant progress that Georgia has made in fulfilling the goals set forth in its Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP).”

The document also noted that the NATO Parliamentary Assembly is concerned “that the unresolved conflicts in the regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia continue to provide a source of tension in the region.”

“Given its role in the current negotiation frameworks, Russia should play a more constructive role in the resolution of those conflicts,” the declaration reads.

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly also urged the member governments of the alliance “to assist in finding mutually acceptable solutions to the unresolved conflicts that plague the region” and “to provide technical assistance to Georgia to speed its integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions.”

The Georgian delegation, which is led by President Saakashvili, also participated in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly session in Paris.
